My husband and I tried for quite a while; almost 2 years. I spent many days looking in the mirror asking why? What’s wrong with me? We finally chose to start the process of testing. During this time my husband was offered a promotion which would move us from Birmingham, AL, back to Atlanta. My heart was always in Atlanta… although my family lives in Florida, I knew once we moved away from there several years ago we wouldn’t be back because of my husband’s job, so I had adopted Atlanta as home… Atlanta is where my husband is from, all of this family lives here and many of our friends. We were overjoyed to be headed home!!!! We chose to “celebrate” that night…

Weeks later we were in Atlanta house-hunting and I just wasn’t feeling right, morning sickness had set in… I wasn’t convinced that I was pregnant yet because I hadn’t missed my cycle so I held off on the disappointment to taking what I thought would be another failed test. Another week passed, Matthew was in Atlanta for work and I was still feeling awful… during my lunch break I drove to Publix and bought a test. I specifically remember telling the pharmacist “this is the one!!!” I got home, took the test and there it was, “positive”! I was finally going to be a momma!!!! I couldn’t believe it!!!! I was sooo emotional, overjoyed and Matthew wasn’t home…. really?!?! Do I call him? No, I can’t tell him over the phone, it had to be in person!!!! The exciting thing was the following day was our anniversary so I drummed up a story and told him I was coming to Atlanta for work training, which wasn’t uncommon since my company is based out of Atlanta. The following morning I woke up early, drove to Atlanta, worked a full day, then it was the moment I had waited for my whole life… the moment I would get to tell my husband we were going to be parents!!! I told him to meet me for dinner and I had it all planned. The traditional gift for 3 year wedding anniversary is leather… I got him a leather journal, put the positive pregnancy test in the pen holder with a note on the first page that read “only the best husbands get promoted to dads!” His reaction was priceless “no, shut up!!!” And so our journey began! This experience showed me that timing is everything; when you let go, stop trying to take control and let God, miracles happen!” Kappie, Expectant MotherMaternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0002 Maternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0003

“Kappie and Matthew just moved back to Atlanta a few months ago to plant their roots – building their dream home and growing their family with the addition of a sweet baby girl on the way. To capture their excitement to welcome baby Alden, we set out for a maternity shoot at Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area in Atlanta.

Arabia Mountain has a fun history, as it was one of several locations where major granite quarrying took place. The mountain’s granite has made its way across the US and makes up buildings and structures such as the U.S. Naval Academy and the Brooklyn Bridge. The land was later donated and has become a park for local residents to enjoy.

“The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak, became a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong.” -Thomas Carlyle

I love this quote. In life, in all relationships and in various seasons, we come across obstacles. How you view them – either as obstacles or as stepping-stones – determines your journey. Parenthood is one of the biggest blessings and wildest journeys. And I know these two will swiftly stride through this next chapter’s stepping stones, hand in hand…”Maternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0004

Kappie and Matthew are such a fun-loving couple that it was a breeze to capture them on this perfect November day. It has been an honor to capture the various milestones for this family, as we got to work together on their anniversary shoot as well. When working with these two, one thing is always for sure – their style is going to be on point! It makes me so happy when I get to see couples head over heels in love with one another and am able to document that season in their lives and help expectant mothers feel beautiful in their images. This is a very vulnerable and raw moment in their lives. Pregnancy puts your body and emotions in a state of flux, and it’s so rewarding when I can make sweet mommas feel good about themselves! They can look back on these photos years from now and remember this time in their lives.” Kristen, PhotographerMaternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0005 Maternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0006 Maternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0007 Maternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0008 Maternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0009 Maternity Photography by Shelby Rae and featured on The Fount Collective, a lifestyle community and publication devoted to the art of being a mother_0010
