“Taking maternity photos was never something I envisioned myself doing, however as the pregnancy progressed further through each milestone, it entered my mind more and more. Watching and feeling your body change, accommodate and grow a life is such an indescribable experience. Additionally, our pregnancy had some bumps a long the way, yet I could not have asked for a more caring and involved husband and partner in this journey. Knowing that no matter what happened we were two people that would love and care for this baby, made all the difference in the world, and I wanted to something that would help document, capture and remind of this life-changing experience. As a first-time mother with a now 3-week-old infant, my journey into motherhood has just begun. From the moment they placed my child on my chest at birth, I felt the most overwhelming feeling of love and caring I have ever experienced. Every moment since then has been the hardest, greatest and most rewarding thing I have done. Even in this short amount of time, it has made me a better person. I am reminded everyday to not sweat the small things, but enjoy the little moments that make you happy.” Joy, Expectant Mother
“I had yet not met John and Joy in person. Joy had been unsure if she wanted maternity photos, but decided late in her pregnancy that she did want this part of her motherhood journey documented. We quickly scheduled her maternity session and chose an outdoor location near their home. They were both clearly excited about being parents for the first time. They had not yet found out their baby’s gender, and were very much looking forward to meeting their son or daughter. Surprisingly, they didn’t have to wait long, as their son unexpectedly made his arrival only a few short days after this session. Part of the reason I love photographing motherhood is the comraderie I feel with other mothers, as we are simultaneously navigating through the most difficult yet rewarding task of parenting our little ones. But I think what I find so rewarding in photographing NEW mothers is being able to witness a woman’s priorities and affections shift instantly. I don’t think any of us have any idea how motherhood (or fatherhood) might change us, until we experience it. I think most of us maintain some idea or plan as to how motherhood will go for us: how we will feel, how we will manage, how we will parent. But I think one of the most interesting parts of motherhood is that it truly alters so much of what held importance in one’s life and brings with it all the unexpected! It is a whirlwind love story that is both beautiful and powerful, and truly awesome to document.” Rachel, Photographer
