“After becoming a mother, you quickly learn to understand why people always say, “It goes so fast!” Because well, it’s the truth. In the thick of the newborn stage, those first few weeks seem to slowly drag along, but then, and before you know it, your precious baby is a walking, talking mini adult needing less and less of you and you needing more of them. I was looking for a way to stop time, a way to capture those fleeting, yet beautiful moments with my two girls. I knew that Elle was the right person to do that!
After two pregnancies back-to-back (my daughters are only 13 months apart to the day!), I had also reached a place of feeling good about “me” again. Pregnancy can do a number on your body, both mentally and physically, so to have a photo shoot where I felt strong and confident in my own skin again was important to me. Plus, it always feels good for this stay-at-home mama to have an excuse to get out her workout leggings and dressed up!
Elle was absolutely flawless in the way that she captured every detail that July evening. Like most women, I struggle with wanting to be in control and trying to make everything “Pinterest perfect.” So, getting a husband and two toddlers ready for an outdoor photo session, during what is usually their bedtime, had me a little stressed out! Elle knew exactly how to handle the chaos as well as the crazy wind that hit right as we were getting started. I remember being so worried about our hair blowing all over the place, and now it’s those little imperfections in the photos that I love most…
I’ve always known that I wanted to be a mother. Whether it was through having biological children of my own or through adoption, it was never really something I had to give a second thought! I was the kid who was always playing house, and being the oldest of four children myself, it was just a natural dream of mine to have family of my own one day. My husband and I both knew early on in our marriage that (God willing) we wouldn’t be waiting too long to have kids. We found out we were expecting our first daughter, Millie, shortly after celebrating our one-year wedding anniversary, and just 3 hours before a 10-hour flight to Europe! We spent two weeks traveling in Italy and Switzerland, before flying home and sharing the news with our friends and family!
We call our second daughter, Vivian, our “Divine Intervention.” Because that’s very much what she was and still is to this day. Unplanned and a complete surprise in every way! We were right in the middle of renovating our first home, and Millie was only six months old at the time of finding out. Needless to say, we weren’t exactly “ready,” but God had a sense of humor! Now, we love having two girls so close together and wouldn’t change a thing!
What does Motherhood mean to me? Gosh, that is a tough question, and one I’m not sure I have the words to answer. Motherhood to me, is loving something so much it hurts. It’s sticky floors and finding cheerios in places you’d never think possible. It’s singing “wheels on the bus” for the 500th time, knowing all too well that you’ll miss signing it one day. It’s exhaustion like no other, and a joy you never thought humanly possible. It’s the utmost sacrifice, and yet God’s greatest earthly blessing. It’s my favorite job in the world and a gift I hope to never take for granted.
Your children don’t want a perfect mom, they just want one who is present… one who will let them break the rules every now and then, play in the fountain after dinner, make the mess, stay up late reading the extra book, and eat the ice cream. Like the old saying goes… they’ll be grown before you know it, and it really does go so fast! Don’t worry about the sticky floors or the fact that you haven’t showered in days. One day you’ll look back and those will be the days you miss the most.” Camille, Mother
“This session was magical. It is the best when moms and dads can slow down with no worries and presently engage their kids. I love the longer family session when there is time for the little ones to play, explore, and be creative. I have fallen in love with this family and my hope is that these photos do justice to their beautiful love. In the initial inquiry email from Camille, she said “your style is exactly what I’m looking for, you are SO talented.” These are my favorite type of clients to work with- clients who have followed the work I have done and already really like it. This is when I can, as a photographer, do my best work. When trust and support is communicated from a client from the beginning, it gives me freedom to dig into my inner artist, instead of having specific requests made that I am having to think about during a session. Camille’s daughter Millie is in my son’s class at school. We became friends one day after school, when our kids were playing together on the playground. I was immediately impressed by Camille, because her two girls are a little more than one year apart. She is a go-getter, working from home leading workouts and promoting a healthy lifestyle for mom. Her work is to inspire moms and encourage them and so I loved working with her on this session.
I love photographing motherhood, because moms aren’t seen very often. Their work is behind the scenes-changing diapers, making mac and cheese, sweeping the kitchen floor for the 100th time. There are no promotions, awards or accolades. To step back and capture these women’s hearts for their children, to celebrate the work they are doing, to value them in their glory is a great blessing to me.” Elle, Photographer
