“This year for Mother’s Day I offered special sessions for moms and their kids. Living here in Japan and raising kids provides its own set of unique challenges and I wanted to highlight the beauty and strength of the women out here who go through pregnancy, birth and raising kids while their husbands are often away. Iwakuni is located in the countryside and is surrounded by beautiful bamboo forests. This beautiful mama is pregnant with her second baby so we did a maternity session and included her adorable two year old daughter, Maddox. Jenn is beautiful inside and out and is always a joy to work with. I met Maddox when she was just 6 months old and it’s been lovely seeing her grow up during our time here in Japan. I love that Jenn has passed her adventurous spirit on to Maddox who can always be found exploring outside.
The bond between mother and child is so special. Mothers know it, live it and feel it but don’t often get to step outside of it and see what it looks like. I’m grateful to be able to show them just how beautiful it is. I believe it’s important for mothers to take the time to document these stages and I want them to feel more confident in themselves and their role after seeing the pictures I take. I also think it’s important for kids to have these memories to look back on when they grow up – to see themselves small and loved and vastly important to their mother. Photographing motherhood is much more than just taking a pretty picture – it is my attempt capturing that special bond in an authentic and beautiful way.” Samantha, Photographer
