“I found out I was pregnant with my first child back in November and never in a million years did I think I would be pregnant, let alone delivering a child, during a global pandemic. COVID-19 completely changed my pregnancy journey and took away a lot of experiences I had looked forward to enjoying with my husband, family, and friends. I could no longer have a baby shower and celebrate this wonderful time with loved ones, my husband and I weren’t able to go on a babymoon and cherish the last days of just the two of us, my family wouldn’t be allowed in the hospital to meet our little one after I gave birth, and no one (aside from my husband) was able to see me once I started to show so our family and friends weren’t able to witness my growing belly with us. Losing these experiences was something I had accepted and was completely okay given the circumstances, but the one thing I really hoped would eventually be possible was to do a maternity shoot so I at least had photographs to remember this special time in our lives. This is why these photos mean so much more to us than just maternity photos as they are the only memories we have of this joyous time in our life and the only photos most family and friends saw of us during our pregnancy journey.
In my opinion, motherhood will always have its ups and downs but the one thing that remains consistent is a mother’s unconditional love for her child. No matter what, you will always love and want the absolute best for your child and that is what makes you a great mother. I believe motherhood starts long before your baby is born. After all, you have 9+ months where you are loving, caring, protecting, providing, and doing everything possible to make sure your little one is healthy. As I write this, my little girl is celebrating being one month old and I can tell you that the first month of your little one’s life as a mother is definitely going to have you in tears but also, and more importantly, so many laughs and smiles. There are things no one can prepare you for until you experience them yourself and I’m sure you will have your own struggles but it’s all completely worth it for the precious little human you have created that stares back at you with the most loving eyes knowing you are her/his mom. I haven’t experienced a greater feeling or joy than being a mom to my little Sophia.” Athena, Expectant Mother
“This family is incredibly special to me as I’ve been a part of their lives since before they were engaged. I have been privileged and honored to capture their most important life milestones including their engagement, their wedding, and now, their maternity photographs. It brings me great joy when I’m able to love and serve my clients in such a full-circle way through celebrating and capturing life’s biggest moments alongside them. Athena and Ross’s session was photographed in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic (with every precaution taken). Although every session I photograph is important, this session took on a new weight, as I knew these photographs would be the only way friends and family could experience and share in this family’s exciting pregnancy journey due to the pandemic. Athena and Ross were full of joy and sharing smiles and laughs. Those candid, authentic moments that showed the full, sweet anticipation they had in preparing to welcome their first child, Sophia, are some of my favorites and memories I hope are treasured for generations to come.
I’m completely humbled and overjoyed each time I’m invited to be a part of someone’s life story. Knowing I have had the privilege to capture a mother’s radiant beauty and strength, the limitless support of her husband, and the wonder of new life not yet earthside will always be a miracle I’m eternally grateful to be witness to. During the pandemic, this promise of new life and new beginnings for this family brought an incredible light to this world when it needed it the most. What a gift I was given during this session to experience a mother and father choosing happiness and excitement, despite the circumstances and the lost experiences with loved ones.
Motherhood is a sacred, special gift, and documenting a woman’s transition into motherhood will always inspire and awe me. Witnessing the bravery and courage mothers have in knowing they are embarking on one of their life’s most important callings — always loving and showing up for their child each day — is a rare beauty to behold. Because of mothers (and the ones who support them) and their sacrificial love, this world is a better place.” McKenzie, Photographer
