“When I walked into Jayeon and Michael’s home I immediately felt the warmth, the abundance of light. With so much light streaming in, I knew I wanted to photograph them in all the places they would carry out their daily life with Isla. I wanted them to look back at their photographs and remember where she slept by their bed, where they rocked her in the corner by the window, where they sat together in the living room with their dog Mocha, and sang to her by the big windows next to the kitchen. All of it was like a backdrop to their story.
From the moment Jayeon opened the door, her joy was evident. She was eager to welcome me in and excited for their photo session. We started with photos of Isla on mom and dad’s bed. Isla almost seemed to be showing off for us. I remember Jayeon, Michael and I laughing and smiling at her while she yawned, squirmed, and watched us back. We became her captive audience. It was that special moment in a session when the creative process just sparked.
My love for photography is pretty simple…it’s the most natural way I’ve been able to express “you’re loved and valuable” to the people I meet. There is something so lovely that happens when you hold a camera up to photograph a new mother or her children. It’s a gesture that says there is something of worth and something worth remembering here. What a special gift to send that message to a mother, to her children, to the whole family.” Megan, Photographer
