“Shanon and Josh are both incredibly kind, generous people. I was introduced to them through Shanon’s sister, whom I have had the pleasure of photographing over the last few years. I felt an instant connection with them as a couple because like my husband, Josh is a Fire Fighter and Shanon’s love of interiors matched mine. When they were expecting their first child, a daughter, and invited me to spend the next eighteen months capturing their growing family. We had met once before for their maternity session, where Shannon was glowing and had that excitement in her eyes knowing that her daughter would be arriving shortly. She also had a confidence in her which made me believe she was ready for this next step in her life.
Their daughter, Olivia, arrived right before the holidays, making the season special and memorable. They invited me into their home after the New Year to capture their new family of three. That morning, Taryn from @tpassifionemakeup, arrived to complete Shannon’s hair and makeup and when I arrived, I was stunned by the most beautiful backdrop of neutrals and such a light-filled home – the best combination in my book!
Interior design is something I’m incredibly passionate about, our home is a huge part of our story and walking into Shanon & Josh’s home I felt welcomed and at peace. We chose this location to create a visual storytelling of what their life resembled within their daughter’s first few days earth-side. Showcasing her nursery, the rocking chair her parents will undoubtedly spend many hours rocking her to sleep, and the client’s living room which was surrounded by large windows allowing all of that glorious light in! Home is where the heart is, after all.
We spent the next hour and a half seeking light-filled corners in their home, while they embraced their two-week-old baby girl. It is truly a privilege to preserve moments like these through photographs, a perspective that allows them as parents to look back on and remember all of those tiny moments along with tiny fingers and toes. I hope when they look back at these images, they don’t just see themselves but see their hearts.
Having three kiddos myself, I understand firsthand that saying “the days are long but the years are short” all too well… Capturing motherhood in all of its forms, the messy, the beautiful, the mundane, it’s all important. We may not showcase those behind-the-scenes photographs as much as we showcase the smiling, but to me, those are what bind us as mothers. We can relate in that moment; and as mothers to young children, there is nothing more sacred than being able to feel a connection with other mommas.” Nicole, Photographer
